Volunteer

The Victim Assistance Center could not continue its services without our dedicated volunteers. These volunteers, called Advocates, help to man our 24-hour hotline and provide hospital accompaniment to crime victims.

Advocates go through a 65-hour training program, that includes the topics listed below.

Medical and legal aspects of victimization
Counseling Issues for children and adults and the dynamics of sexual assault and other violent crimes
24- Hour Hotline- available for crisis counseling, answer questions, and make referrals
24- Hour Hospital Accompaniment - available to be with a client in the emergency room, clinic or private physician's office
Legal Advocacy- accompany clients to police interviews, court appearances and preliminary hearings
Community Outreach- present agency services and other educational material to the community at health fairs and other community events

Trainings are held in the spring and fall of each year. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age, have access to private transportation and a private telephone, and obtain a PA Child Line clearance and Criminal Background check.
